The Winston-Salem Foundation announces 66 Community Grants totaling more than $1,905,500 from July through December 2023, made possible by donations from community members who support the Foundation’s flexible grantmaking funds. CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT GRANTS
Capital Improvement Grants support Forsyth County nonprofits for time-limited projects to acquire, upgrade, and maintain physical assets such as property, buildings, technology, or equipment.
- a/perture Cinema – $25,000 to assist with bathroom, entrance, and emergency preparedness upgrades
- Clemmons Food Pantry – $6,600 to replace freezers
- Crossnore Communities for Children – $25,000 to replace electronic health records system
- Experiment in Self-Reliance – $15,000 to repair HVAC system and replace IT server
- Fairytale Farm Animal Sanctuary – $21,527 for kennel system to house small animal rescues
- Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County – $15,000 for new scaffolding and van upfitting
- Honorable Youth – $25,000 to support construction of new cohousing building
- Insight Human Services – $25,000 to replace flooring and paint walls at the downtown Winston-Salem clinic
- Jim Shaw Ace Academy – $18,000 for a vehicle, drone, aviation equipment, and software
- Kaleideum – $15,000 to support the construction of the "Food for Thought" immersive exhibit in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank
- Latino Community Services – $25,000 to assist with beautification and accessibility of their facility
- North Carolina Museum of Art - Winston-Salem (formerly SECCA) – $21,000 to support a mixed-use space with furniture and storage
- Old Salem Museums and Gardens – $25,000 to repair the replica of the "Log Church" representing the oldest Black congregation in NC
- Parenting PATH – $25,000 to upfit their new building with an HVAC system, ADA restrooms, and major material goods
- Salemtowne – $20,000 to purchase and install a solar energy system at the health care center
- Shepherd's Center of Kernersville – $24,635 to renovate and upgrade their facility
- Smart Start of Forsyth County – $25,000 for educator resources and supplies and upgraded technology and software
- Smiley's Sweets – $20,000 for a van, furniture, and equipment
- Triad Cultural Arts – $25,000 to support the restoration of a historic shotgun house from Winston-Salem’s first planned African American community
- Trinity Center – $25,000 to reconfigure and renovate office space to accommodate group and individual therapy sessions
- Veterans Helping Veterans Heal (VHVH) – $25,000 to replace flooring and paint walls at their 24-bed facility
- Winston-Salem Center for Education and the Arts – $25,000 to replace a collapsing retaining wall at a facility that houses four local nonprofits
COMMUNITY PARTNER GRANTS
The Foundation supports three community partners with annual operating grants to fulfill their work. Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods and Forsyth Futures (in addition to HandsOn Northwest NC) are key partners in supporting the Foundation’s work in the community.

FOCUS AREA GRANTS
Focus Area Grants support local nonprofits who are working to advance equity in education and build an inclusive economy. These efforts are crucial to ensuring that Winston-Salem becomes a place where race no longer predicts life outcomes.
- Asset Building Coalition of Forsyth County – $75,000 for operating support
- Center for Trauma Resilient Communities – $62,975 for trauma-informed staff training and implementation at Main Street Academy
- Cyber Intelligence Transforming Youth (CITY) – $60,000 to support a cyber intelligence workforce development program for adults
- HUSTLE Winston-Salem – $80,000 for operating support
- Providence – $30,000 for a trauma informed employment coach
- Simon Green Atkins Community Development Corporation – $150,000 for operating support over two years
- The Do School – $55,000 for a site supervisor
- Triad Restorative Justice – two grants totaling $8,875 to support Seeking Equity
- Winston-Salem Freedom Schools – $10,000 to support staff capacity
- Winston-Salem State University Foundation – $50,000 to support Winston-Salem Teachers for Equity, Achievement, Community, & Humanity (WS-TEACH)
- Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Continuum of Care – $75,000 to support a Director of Trauma Resilience Strategies
- Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools – $55,000 for the Capstone program at the Career Center, two grants totaling $12,800 to support WORD Academy, and $60,195 to support the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program
SMALL GRANTS
Small grants are available to organizations and groups with annual incomes of $150,000 or less.
- A Heart For Change – $500 to support youth and their families in back-to-school activities
- Black Law Students Association at Wake Forest School of Law – $1,000 to support student participation at the Constance Baker Motley Regional Mock Trial Competition
- Blind Power Company, Inc. – $1,000 to support website accessibility and awareness activities
- DENT Creative Reuse Center – $1,000 to support the Mixed Doubles series
- Into The Wild – $1,000 to support an intensive outpatient treatment for women experiencing opioid dependency
- Joy Prom Winston-Salem – $500 to support Joy Prom 2023
- Mobile Peer Unit, Inc. – $1,000 to pilot a peer support program in East Winston-Salem
- Musical Empowerment – $1,000 to support music mentorship to Forsyth County students
- My FACE – $1,000 to assess the mentoring program
- Northwood Estates Neighborhood Association – $1,000 to support minor home improvements for safety in the Northwood Estates neighborhood
- Out at the Movies – $1,000 to support a world premiere screening and promote LGBTQIA+ films in Winston-Salem
- Parkland Magnet High School PTSA – $500 to support Parkland Cultural Community Day, bringing together the neighborhood and community surrounding Parkland High School
- Southeast Neighborhood Association – $1,000 to support the Southeast Neighborhood Association's 10th Annual Community Day and Job Fair
- Tori's Choice – $1,000 to support a clothing drive at the Minnie Lee Davis Harris Community Center
- Una Bendición – $1,000 to support workshops for and build social capital among Hispanic/Latinx families in Northeast Winston-Salem

- Action4Equity – $10,000 to support a consultant to facilitate the collaborative work of The Forsyth Promise
- Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation (AARF) – $10,000 to support new facilities, training, and volunteer programs
- BIPOC to BIPOC – $10,000 to support the collective research group
- Forsyth Humane Society – $10,000 to expand comprehensive healthcare services to animals
- Fur Ever Friends of NC – $10,000 to support the Winston-Salem Community Care Plan for pet owners
- Humane Solution Spay/Neuter Program – $10,000 for administrative software, vaccine vouchers, and animal surgeries
- NC Cooperative Extension, Forsyth County – $8,000 to build social capital by expanding community gardens in Forsyth County and $9,500 for improvements to the Arboretum at Tanglewood
- Piedmont Animal Welfare Alliance – $7,964.72 to support New Leash on Life
- Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center – $10,000 for veterinary expenses
- TROSA – $10,000 to create a green space and beautify the new Winston-Salem campus
