Announcing more than $1.8 Million in Community Grants

The Winston-Salem Foundation announces 59 Community Grants totaling more than $1,821,150 from January through June 2024, made possible by donations from community members who support the Foundation’s flexible grantmaking funds. CAPACITY-BUILDING GRANTS
Capacity-Building Grants strengthen local nonprofits by supporting adaptation, strong management and technical skills, as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion training and coaching to help organizations advance racial equity through their work.

  • 88.5 FM/WFDD Public Radio - $10,000 to support professional development for staff team
  • Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation (AARF) - $54,750 for staff position focused on volunteer management over three years
  • Art SHAC, Inc. - $54,750 for staff position focused on volunteer management over three years
  • Children's Law Center of Central NC - $10,000 for phase two of marketing and communication assistance, specifically video production
  • City with Dwellings: A Community First Initiative - $54,750 for assistant director position over three years
  • Community Design Studio of WS - $47,304 for administrative coordinator and development consultation over three years
  • Crisis Control Ministry - $20,000 to support DEI and trauma informed training and education for staff
  • Delicious by Shereen - $20,000 for marketing assistance
  • Delta Arts Center - $20,000 for assessment, planning, evaluation, and community engagement assistance
  • Down Syndrome Association of Greater W-S - $54,750 for staff position(s) focused on DEI and client advocacy over three years
  • Dress for Success Winston-Salem - $6,000 for technology and software assistance
  • Green Tree Peer Center - $54,150 for administrative assistant staff position over three years
  • Heart Math Tutoring - $54,750 to support further expansion in Forsyth County over three years
  • Hope To Thrive - $10,000 to support DEI training
  • HUSTLE Winston-Salem - $54,750 to support financial and data analysis, fund development, and HR consultation over three years
  • Institute for Dismantling Racism - $25,000 for strategic planning and digital consultation
  • Korner's Folly Foundation - $25,000 for operations coordinator staff position
  • LEAD Girls of NC - $25,000 for strategic planning consultation
  • Love Community Development Corporation - $5,500 for website and development assistance
  • Memorial Industrial Community Development Corporation - $25,000 for planning, implementation, and program evaluation over two years
  • My FACE - $20,000 to support succession planning and executive coaching
  • Piedmont Animal Welfare Alliance - $35,000 for coaching and consultation over two years
  • Piedmont Environmental Alliance - $25,000 to support a manager of events and partnerships
  • Planned Parenthood South Atlantic - $25,000 to support a marketing campaign
  • Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center - $42,500 for expanded staff hours and contracted services over two years
  • Sawtooth School for Visual Art - $25,000 for strategic planning consultation
  • Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem - $25,000 to assist with associate executive director transition
  • The Dream School - $12,600 for bookkeeper over three years
  • Triad Restorative Justice - $54,750 for program director over three years
  • Virtuous Women In SisterHood - $15,000 to support consultation, strategic planning, and training
  • Winston-Salem Symphony - $10,000 for development software and training
  • World Relief Triad - $54,750 for community engagement manager over three years


COMMUNITY PARTNER GRANTS

The Foundation supports three community partners with annual operating grants to fulfill their work. Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods and Forsyth Futures (in addition to HandsOn Northwest NC) are key partners in supporting the Foundation’s work in the community.  

  • HandsOn Northwest NC - $180,000 for operating support over two years

FOCUS AREA GRANTS


Focus Area Grants support local nonprofits working to advance equity in education and build an inclusive economy. These efforts are crucial to ensuring that Winston-Salem becomes a place where race no longer predicts life outcomes.  

  • Cyber Intelligence Transforming Youth - $2,000 to provide technology and program incentives
  • Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministries - $35,000 to expand the Transition to Work services and support the Transportation Coordinator
  • Forsyth Tech Foundation - $50,000 for the Small Business Center to support BIPOC business owners with growing their businesses through mentorship and small grants to cover technical assistance
  • Forsyth Technical Community College - $10,000 to continue providing emergency transportation for students and implement a sustainable transportation intervention plan
  • Goler Community Development Corporation - $60,000 for operating support over two years
  • Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC - $30,000 for a mission advancement program assistant
  • Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. - $5,000 to provide transportation for students to participate in the ASPIRE internship program
  • LEAD Girls of NC - $10,000 for the LEAD Girls Program at Main Street Academy
  • NC Employee Ownership Center - $50,000 to support employee ownership in Forsyth County
  • School Justice Partnership - $50,000 to continue supporting organizational planning and facilitation
  • Simon Green Atkins Community Development Corporation - $13,900 for community garden beautification
  • The Cares Project Inc - $40,000 to provide accessible and affordable vehicle loans to individuals with limited income
  • Triad Restorative Justice - $103,600 for school-based restorative projects in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools
  • Ujima Community Development Corporation - $35,000 for operating support
  • Winston-Salem Black Chamber of Commerce - $30,000 to improve the resiliency of Black business owners and entrepreneurs through training and technical assistance
  • Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools - $126,000 to support Transition 2 Teach

SMALL GRANTS


Small grants support organizations and groups with annual incomes of $150,000 or less.  

  • Anuli Pregnancy Care Services - $1,600 to promote and empower transitions into parenthood through the family connections program
  • Dream the Impossible - $1,000 to support mental health awareness programming for youth athletes
  • Liberty East Redevelopment - $2,000 to support the student reward-based literacy program, DEAR initiative
  • Love Community Development Corporation - $2,000 to support a peer navigator to provide bilingual Spanish services
  • Necessary Crumbs - $2,000 to support a pilot project to train community members as doulas and as a maternal care network
  • Salem Band - $500 to support a free special concert with performers from Paperhand Puppet Intervention
  • Smiley's Sweets - $750 to support youth and family cooking and nutrition education classes
  • Southeast Neighborhood Association - $2,000 to support a six-week summer financial literacy and introduction to employment program for youth ages 14-17
  • Virtuous Women In SisterHood - $750 to build social capital among survivors of domestic violence, direct service providers supporting them, and the broader community
  • Winston-Salem Rise - $2,000 to support field survey collection in four communities identified as having the least economic opportunity
