Participant Scholarships

The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem embraces a model of inclusiveness that invites all women and girls of our community to realize their power to make a difference. One of the ways The Women’s Fund aims to be inclusive is by offering membership to women and girls who have limited access to financial resources, but whose civic, community or cultural work shows a commitment to issues affecting women and girls. Since 2007, The Women’s Fund has awarded participant scholarships to 83 deserving women and girls.

Participant scholarships are not cash awards; instead, the scholarship awards recipients the full benefits of membership in The Women’s Fund.  Women and girls awarded a participant scholarship become part of a group membership and are considered members of the Fund for a one-year term. Individuals may reapply for a second one-year membership as a participant scholar. Participant scholars are invited, but not required to contribute to the Fund at any financial level.

Participant scholars are required to demonstrate a minimum level of involvement in the Fund, such as:

  • participating in the voting process,
  • serving on a committee of The Women’s Fund,
  • serving as a spokesperson for the Fund,
  • advocating on behalf of the Fund,
  • attending Women’s Fund events, and/or volunteering with a Fund grantee or other nonprofit focused on the needs of women and girls.

Please note: The Participant Scholarship is not a monetary award given to recipients. It is a scholarship that awards recipients membership in The Women’s Fund.

When to Apply
Participant scholarship applications may be submitted at any time during the year; however, applications are reviewed only once a year.

The next Application Deadline is Friday, March 6, 2015.  Applicants will be notified of decisions by Friday, March 20, 2015.

Nominate a Scholar
Members of our community can nominate women and girls for a Participant Scholarship. Nominated candidates who qualify for consideration of a scholarship will be asked to complete a short application indicating their interest in the Participant Scholarship Program. Your nomination will serve as the applicant’s letter of recommendation. As you nominate a scholar, please keep in mind The Women’s Fund awards scholarships to those women and girls without the financial means to participate as an individual or group member.  Click here for more information about nominating a scholar.

Please submit nominations by no later than February 26, 2015.
