2024 Forsyth County Teacher Grants Announced

The Winston-Salem Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 Forsyth County Teacher Grants to support professional development opportunities for K-12th grade teachers in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.  

Recipients were selected by a committee comprised of professional educators who make awards in support of innovative and results-oriented educational experiences for teachers to improve their teaching ability and enhance the subject or content being taught in the classroom.  

A total of $70,496.83 was granted to the following 36 teacher grant recipients:

  • Tonya Allison – Ward Elementary School – $1,331 to complete Orff Schulwerk Level Three
  • Tammy Barnes – Piney Grove Elementary School – $2,280 to attend the Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Conference
  • Carrie Bennett – Mount Tabor High School – $2,500 to attend the National Council on Social Studies Conference
  • Kimberly Borger – Meadowlark Elementary School – $2,187.57 to participate in hands-on music learning to improve teaching group performances
  • Connie Brake – WS/FCS Instructional Services – $1,764.55 to learn techniques for supporting low-vision students' access to literacy
  • Cheryl Bullard – Meadowlark Elementary School – $2,349 to attend the Science of Reading training
  • Jill Carter – Easton Elementary School – $629 to attend the Get Your Teach On Conference in Orlando, Florida
  • Amy Clay – WS/FCS Instructional Services – $2,500 to attend the Conference on Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury
  • Jennifer Clayton – Cash Elementary School – $2,280 to attend the Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Conference
  • Tammy Hancock – Vienna Elementary School – $2,500 to attend the American Library Association Annual Conference
  • Erin Harp – Lewisville Elementary School – $149 to attend the California Association for the Gifted Summer Institute
  • Vikki Heaney – Philo-Hill Magnet Academy – $2,500 to improve library resources at Philo-Hill Magnet Academy
  • LaKisha Henry-Simmons – Lewisville Middle School – $2,500 to attend the American School Counselors Association Annual Conference
  • Tiffany Ivers – Sherwood Forest Elementary School – $2,495.48 to improve library resources at Sherwood Forest Elementary School
  • Wanda Kellyman – WS/FCS Instructional Services – $2,309.78 to support a mental health awareness program across 3rd-5th grade classrooms
  • Katherine Kendall – Lewisville Middle School – $2,500 for educational travel to France to explore the impact of World War II
  • Deeann Kidd – Caleb's Creek Elementary School – $1,100 to support a Kindergarten Composting Project at Caleb's Creek Elementary
  • Christine Kuhlenkamp – Hanes Magnet School – $435 to attend the North Carolina Reading Association Conference
  • Melanie Langley – Atkins Academic & Technology High School – $2,398 to attend the Magnet Schools of America Conference
  • Margaret Latta-Milord – Forest Park Elementary School – $1,621 to support trauma-resilient and responsive school environments
  • Michelle Lewis – Cash Elementary School – $2,500 to attend the Conscious Discipline Institute
  • Rebecca Montes De Oca – Old Town Elementary School – $1,999 to attend Breathe for Change, social and emotional regulation training for elementary schools
  • Amber Nichols – Mineral Springs Elementary School – $2,500 to cultivate and inspire student career pathway discovery
  • Kathleen O'Connor – The Special Children's School – $2,500 to attend the Conscious Discipline Institute
  • Frann Paige – Clemmons Elementary School – $2,381 to attend the National Art Education Association Conference
  • Martin Pruitt – Griffith Elementary School – $1,095 to complete Orff Schulwerk Level Three
  • Cynthia Ramirez – The Kingswood School – $2,500 to attend the Innovative School Summit
  • Sara Rhyne – WS/FCS Instructional Services – $895 to learn the artful design and facilitation techniques
  • Jeff Rodgers – Atkins Academic & Technology High School – $2,500 to support a gaming industry expo for student career exploration and learning
  • Ameriki Somers – Paisley IB Middle School – $2,500 for attendance at the American Library Association Annual Conference
  • Anne-Marie Stevens – Kernersville Middle School – $540 to provide technology and engineering learning for students
  • Kristina Stevenson – Smith Farm Elementary School – $1,636.45 to attend the North Carolina Art Education Association Conference
  • Sylvan Taylor – Downtown Elementary School – $1,469 to attend the National Association of Gifted Children Conference
  • Mary Tesh – Ward Elementary School – $1,281 to build resilience and communication effectiveness through a social emotional learning technique
  • Debra Troxell – West Forsyth High School – $2,500 for educational travel with Global Exploration for Educators Organization to Southeast Asia
  • Anna Wade – Philo-Hill Magnet Academy – $1,500 to attend a Kodály Certification Workshop

The following endowment funds held at the Foundation provide the annual funding support for the Forsyth County Teacher Grants: the Sam and Anne Booke Family Trust, the Doris Joyce Kohfeldt Educator Fund, the Maytrice Walton Fund, and the Blanche Raper Zimmerman Fund.
